This year at BRP, the range of high-performance watercraft (aka, musclecraft) comprises six models with features that, at first glance, would seem quite similar. In order to better understand the naming scheme (the less powerful GTR 215 model nothwithstanding) the builder has designed four variants (RXT 260, RXT-X 260, RXT iS 260 and RXT-X aS 260) around one of the most powerful engines offered. The variations include adding an suspension system – denoted by the “aS ou iS” – and equipping some versions with an X Package that has several sporty additional features. Introduced this year, the sixth model, the RXP-X 260, inherits the same powerful motor, but it ups the sportiness a notch due to its new hull and unique performance characteristics.
Our test model this week, the Sea-Doo RXT-X aS 260, has all of Bombardier’s latest, most advanced technology. Of course its price places it at the top of the musclecraft line. Adjustable suspension is the reason behind its high price compared to the RXP-X 260, which nevertheless is a bit more exclusive and offers higher performance. The RXT-X aS 260 therefore offers a long list of standard features and leading-edge technology, reflecting its rather steep price.
Racing appeal
The RXT-X aS 260 is a downright head-turner. Its yellow and black colour scheme has been associated with high performance for several years at Sea-Doo. Its sleek appeal adds to the impression of power, while its angular lines add a sporty, modern touch. A long seat, which can hold up to three passengers, offers a good compromise between comfort and sportiness, while its vibrant colours also add style. The eye-catching “X” handlebars can be adjusted in many ways to allow you to find the perfect driving position. With its aluminum frame construction, you’d think it was a racing watercraft. As for storage space, sizeable objects can stay dry in the storage bin as well as in the glove box.
Power and stealth
The core of this model truly is its powerful engine. Lift the seat and you’ll find a four-stroke 1503 XHO Rotax engine with nothing less than 260 hp. Many heavier, more imposing watercraft don’t boast the same power. Once in the saddle, the engine starts with the push of a button. The first thing we noticed was how silent it was. Four-stroke technology not only helps reduce pollution, but paired with the D-Sea Bel system it makes this one of the quietest watercrafts, which should please your neighbours and shore dwellers no end. We’re a long way from noisy, bothersome two-stroke engines.
At startup, it is quite practical to be able to remain at a standstill, whereas in the past watercraft started moving right away. We can therefore settle in comfortably, organize our things, and leave the dock more easily. Pressing on the throttle gets us moving, while pressing the lever on the left handlebar activates the brakes. However, if you keep pressing the same lever, you shift into reverse, which simplifies manoeuvring in tight corners. In short, BRP’s iTC (Intelligent Throttle Control) system allows you to handle the watercraft with much greater confidence and simplicity.
Different performance
Once activated, the multifunction screen can display a wealth of information. RPM, speed, time, fuel consumption and even – for this model – boost pressure. Depending on the model selected, the RXT-X aS 260 can perform in different ways. Touring mode offers more progressive acceleration and a sporty ride. Press the Sport button and the watercraft transforms into a racing vehicle. The throttle responds to the slightest pressure, giving you enhanced power control in any situation, whether exiting a curve or at the bottom of the trough. Now there’s a mode that really does justice to this model! In contrast, ECO mode offers a more comfortable ride by slowing down throttle response, a useful feature when carrying passengers as acceleration is more linear. This mode maximizes fuel economy by adjusting the power curve and reducing the top speed. The engine suddenly transforms into a much gentler cruising model.
A few seconds are all that is needed to reach top speed, which is, in the case of the RXT-X aS 260, somewhere around 106 km/h (66 mph), which I’m sure you will agree is fast enough on the water. Its great stability adds to the feeling of safety and makes for a more reassuring experience. You feel like the watercraft is gripping the water! Its adjustable suspension, which can be manually adjusted, also reduces the impact of the waves. Even if it is fun to experience all this power, we appreciate the ability to move at a more reasonable cruising speed of around 64 km/h (40 mph), which generates fuel consumption of around 30 litres per hour. As a result, you can travel great distances and reach points of interest more quickly.
To enhance its sporty performance, in 2012 the RXT-X aS 260 offers some interesting innovations. It has new adjustable trim tabs, which limit bow elevation and bring greater stability. There are also new forward and rear sponsons, which are also adjustable, allowing you to customize the watercraft performance on the waves and while turning. Do you want it to bite down harder? That’s up to you. One thing is certain, the Sea-Doo RXT-X aS 260 delivers enhanced performance, and you will feel like you’re steering with your fingertips. What a pleasure it is to frolic in the water on a hot day or simply mosey along and admire the seascape!
The Sea-Doo RXT-X aS 260 2012 has a terrific dual nature. It has got real muscle, but its suspension guarantees a civilized ride in all conditions: a fine compromise.
