The 53rd edition of the Toronto International Boat Show, Canada’s largest boat show, took place last week. Visitors were able to admire the most prominent makes in addition to discovering several new models, including great premieres. This was the first time that I attended the Toronto Show, and I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised. I had the great pleasure to admire more than a hundred boats in the heart of winter, all showcased under the same roof! This is the perfect venue to make visitors dream and, especially, anticipate the return of the boating season.
The Toronto International Boat Show exhibits a wide range of models and it is easy to understand why it stands as Canada’s largest boat show. However, after discussing with a few show-goers, it would seem that this show followed the current trends. There were fewer full-size boats, while certain makes were almost missing, as was the case for Doral. I also noted that high-performance boats were completely missing. I agree that these are not the best-selling models but, just like the exotic sport cars in a car show, this type of boat always attracts attention!
Several new models
As regards new models, we enjoyed several premieres. Among other things, visitors were able to admire the brand new 330 Signature exhibited by Chaparral, while Sea-Doo introduced its 2011 230 SP. This sport boat shares the characteristics of the Wake model, which is well adapted to water sports, but in a more affordable format. As regards sailboats, Hunter unveiled its latest e36 model, with its dual personality making a compromise between comfort and performance. Engine-builder Volvo introduced its IPS 2 propulsion system, this next generation is intended to large-size boats of over 100 feet. Finally, Sea-Ray exhibited the 250 SLX, an open deck boat whose characteristics position it in a more sophisticated class than the other models of the line.
A wide range of activities
The Toronto International Boat Show is more than a venue showcasing new boats. In fact, we appreciate almost as much the numerous activities offered and, most of all, the section dedicated exclusively to all kinds of equipment and accessories. As we all know, boat owners are constantly on the lookout for a miracle product or the latest innovation. Various activities also enable the entire family to have a good time and revive our passion for boating. The Show also features “The Lake”, a coliseum that is literally transformed into an indoor lake where visitors can observe various demonstrations or even paddle in a kayak for a small ride. In short, this show is much more than a simple exhibition, and I was even surprised that I spent almost more time on the “toys” side than on the boat side!
